About

Kilshanny House is a rustic country pub with beautifully reclaimed stone walls, wooden floors and a warm, cosy atmosphere. Our aim is to provide simple, honest food, friendly and attentive service, good wines and a great pint!

Matthew Strefford, Chef Proprietor of Kilshanny House.

History of the House

Built in the early 19th Century, Kilshanny House has operated under many different guises preceding current owners Matthew and Michelle Strefford's purchase in May 2021.

The building started life as a local general store, pub and farm under Austin and Maria Thynne and Peter Considine where it earnt the nickname 'The Shop'. The building was purchased in 1980 by Noel Hassett and Nuala Brooks who converted it into a bed and breakfast style accommodation business called 'Kilshanny House'.

In 1997, Aidan Galvin, an experienced publican purchased the building and began work lovingly reclaiming and restoring the original stone walls and building the business as an integral part of the local community. Aidan and his wife Mary operated Kilshanny House until Aidan's retirement in 2020.

Matthew and Michelle Strefford purchased Kilshanny House in May 2021. Matthew's 20 year career as a chef has seen him travel the world as well as working in a number of top hotels and restaurants in the UK and Ireland. Their vision is to build on the solid foundations put down by all the previous owners before them and build a reputation as one of the best places to eat, drink and relax in the area!

Our Food Style

At Kilshanny House we aim to provide a place for guests to enjoy good food and drink in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Our Chefs, Matthew Strefford and Conor Madigan have a wealth of experience in top kitchens around the world and share a passion for cooking simple, seasonal food for all to enjoy. Our ethos is simple; to source good ingredients, locally where possible and treat them with respect to create tasty dishes that will be enjoyable and interesting, yet recognisable and familiar. Our service is attentive whilst remaining relaxed and informal. Our exposed stone walls and bare tables embody our ethos of simplicity, there are no tablecloths and no dress code.

Drinks

Whilst we are very dedicated in our food offering, we are equally passionate about remaining a place for guests to enjoy a good pint or a few drinks with friends and family. We have a full range of draught and bottled beers, spirits and a varied wine list available at all times. Our outdoor seating as well as our upstairs space means that we should always have room for all to enjoy themselves at Kilshanny House.

Outdoor Dining

During the warmer months, we offer outdoor dining in our garden, overlooking the beautiful countryside surrounding Kilshanny. We have a stone built, wood fired oven and grill in the garden where we prepare and cook all dishes for our 'Tine' menu. Delicious Irish meats, fresh fish, seafood and vegetables as well as flat breads and pizzas are grilled and roasted to create incredible dishes full of the unique flavour that comes with cooking with fire. These are paired with tasty salads, dressings, salsas and sauces to create a unique menu celebrating some of the best produce available to us. Our use of the outdoor space is stricly weather permitting and our opening times and availability will be advertised on our social media platforms when necessary.

Private Parties and Events.

We are always open to discuss private parties, weddings, christenings, confirmations etc. We have ample space for up to 50 guests as well as sufficient space outdoors for BBQ parties for up to 100 guests.
